Dan Dau

The staged concert, “Dan Dau”, is the outcome of the dynamics generated by “Uma História da Dúvida” (1998). The music   ̶ a fundamental component of Clara Andermatt’s works, where she often counts with the collaboration of composer João Lucas   ̶ attains an even bigger prominence in this piece, where the various sounds of Cape Verdean music   ̶ morna, batuque, rezas, choros   ̶ are interweaved with European and African sound textures, and where the urban sounds are present through rap, pop/rock and Jazz.

“Dan Dau” is a highly unusual concert; the music finds expression in the extreme energy and emotions conveyed by the movement of the dancers-musicians-singers: five Cape Verdeans, two Portuguese, one Spanish and the choreographer herself.

Example of multicultural relations, “Dan Dau” emerges from the knowledge and mutual enrichment of European and non-European cultural expressions, in a celebration of diversity and of common values.

“(...) These are popular roots that intersect with something improbable but truthful, in what they contain of curiosity, personal contribution and the compulsive desire to create. From the very beginning of the journey, two visions loomed in the horizon: a performance and an album. Opportunities to see and hear the new phase of an already long story of adventures and connections.”
